Armed, empowered and no men allowed.
“I don’t have to rely on some guy to help me do something,” Karen Rinetti said.
The Well Armed Woman Sacramento Chapter meets a couple times a month at a North Highlands gun range. It’s a place for ladies to shoot and learn together.
“We tend to feel when we’re shooting with a man or husband or whatever a little intimidated,” Rinetti said.
There’s many reasons why a woman walks through their front doors.
Lori Shaw started attending after her home was invaded in December of 2015.
“After that I realized I was not able to protect myself or anyone in my home and it’s important that I was able to do that, so I thought well, I’ll start at the gun range,” Shaw said.
The level of experience in the group ranges from none to decades.
Some women have a background in shooting rifles, but not pistols. So this session is a place to try things out.
“The comradery with women, being able to shoot different guns, we’re very open,” Chris said.
Across the country there’s 222 ‘The Well Armed Woman’ Chapters in 49 states.
The interest in the Sacramento area keeps growing and it’s just couple years old.
“We are having to close classes because they are full. There’s just a huge increase in people wanting to understand to be those responsible gun owners, not just buy a gun,” Sacramento Chapter Leader Debbie MacDonald said.
What should you expect at one of the meetings?
There’s a chance to fire off some rounds before or after the meeting, or you can always just observe.
Certified instructors are there to help with questions.
Then there’s a classroom component where members hear about a topic for about an hour.
On the day ABC10 visited the subject was ‘Psychological and Physiological Reactions to a Dynamic Critical Incident’.
On other days the issues can be less intense, but just as important like how to properly clean a gun.
For most in the room it’s a place for them to share their own experiences with other women and feel in control of protecting themselves.
“We are in a changing world and women are not any longer saying my husband will protect me, it is up to us to protect ourselves,” MacDonald said.
