CONWAY, S.C. –

The Gun Store in Conway has two new programs to help more women get involved in shooting.

Employee at The Gun Store in Conway said for the past few years, more and more women have come in wanting to learn to shoot.

Now, the business is offering two new programs to help women get involved.

“I think sometimes women are vulnerable, and they’re vulnerable even more so when it comes to their children,” Tiffany Richardson said.

Richardson is one of The Gun Store’s newest female shooters.

“It’s a little bit intimidating at first,” Richardson said.

She said she did not grow up around firearms, but wanted to learn more about them.

“The biggest thing is protection, and knowledge, knowing how to shoot,” Richardson explained.

So she joined a group of women that meet every Tuesday night for “Ladies Night” at The Gun Store.

“It takes out that intimidation factor to work with the women and feel like we’re in it together,” Richardson said.

But the programs are about more than just shooting, as women learn basic safety and how to handle a firearm.

“It introduces them to firearms, it kind of breaks that boundary of insecurity,” Maria Wallace, whose husband is part owner of The Gun Store said.

“The mission behind it is to empower women, and build up their confidence,” Michelle Floyd added.

Floyd’s husband is the other part owner of the store, where they work hard to make women feel comfortable.

The two women work with the participants on everything from the basics, to the very best skills.

“Everybody has something to offer, everybody is at different level,” Floyd said.

She said whether it’s for protection, or friendly competition, the classes give the women confidence while handling a firearm.

The Ladies night classes take place every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“The Well Armed Woman” program is part of a national organization that works to help empower women. The group is just getting started and meets once a month
