Smith & Wesson Shield Usage & Features

Primary Use:

Concealed Carry

Are you right handed or left handed?

Right

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

The Shield is offered without a thumb safety which appealed to me. The size is slightly larger than some conceal carry pistols, but it is still concealable and I feel confident carrying it.

Tell us about shooting this gun:

The gun shoots awesome! I have never had any type of failure with it. I use it for my conceal gun and have used it IDPA shoots as well. It is the perfect size, fits great in my hand, and I trust it and my ability to make a good shot with it. Smith & Wesson got it right with this one!

How does it fit your hand, how do you like the sights, how difficult is it to rack the slide, how would you describe the trigger pull, and how would you describe the recoil?

This gun is a great fit. I put Talon grips on it which make it even better, but not needed. It has three dot sights, the slide is slightly harder to pull but I use an overhand grip and it works great. I’m pretty quick with it as I have used it at IDPA shoots as well. I think it has a nice trigger pull and recoil isn’t too bad. I had a .40 that was terrible!

How reliable is it?

This gun has never once had a misfeed, misfire, nothing! I clean it frequently and it is easy to field strip. I enjoy cleaning it.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

Nope! I have used reloaded and factory new ammo and never once had an issue.

Does this gun have any specific ammunition requirements? If so, please explain:

No.

What do you dislike about shooting this gun, if anything?

Nothing, I love this gun!

Was it easy to take down and clean?

Very easy to take down. Lock the slide back, push the take down ever, push a little pin inside down and the slide is off. Easier than my Ruger LCP (ugh, that’s another review).

Would you recommend this gun?

Yes.

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

You can’t go wrong with Smith & Wesson. The Shield is perfect size, not too big and not too small. Easier to control than a Ruger LCP or even a Bodyguard. It’s the nature of the beast: .380 vs 9mm. Also being a bit larger, you can get a good grip on it.

Anything else you would like to share about the gun?

The Shield comes with a safety or without which is a nice option. I prefer no safety, so that is what I purchased. It comes with a flush magazine with 7 round capacity and an extended with 8 round capacity. I use the 7 while I carry and the 8 in a holster for back up.
