Smith and Wesson M&P Shiled Usage & Features

Primary Use:

Concealed Carry

Are you right handed or left handed?

Right

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

Size and caliber.

Tell us about shooting this gun:

Easy to load (with a reloader) and easy to find ammo for it. A little expensive to just use for target practice with the price of ammo continuing to climb.

How does it fit your hand, how do you like the sights, how difficult is it to rack the slide, how would you describe the trigger pull, and how would you describe the recoil?

The Smith and Wesson Shield may not be for all ladies. For me and several of my friends, this is an extremely hard gun to rack. So hard that I may not keep it, even though it fits my hands well and I like shooting it. Trigger pull and recoil are what I expected, since I was used to shooting a Glock 19. Sights are good and accurate and I clean the gun myself. However, the struggle and difficulty in racking the slide is real, and unfortunately ending up on the “too hard pile.” I’ve practiced until I could no longer hold the gun without shaking or pain. I don’t want to have any hesitation, or work that hard in a critical situation when being ready to shoot is life changing.

How reliable is it?

Reliable if not in a hurry and don’t mind multiple attempts to rack the slide.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

I prefer Winchester or Federal.

What do you dislike about shooting this gun, if anything?

Too hard to rack the slide, especially for a woman. Even the DH admitted his concern.

Was it easy to take down and clean?

Yes. Taught myself from You Tube video.

Would you recommend this gun?

No.

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

Not really for women, unless you have big hands and lots of muscle. My husband didn’t have much sympathy for me until he tried racking it himself.

Anything else you would like to share about the gun?

The Smith and Wesson Shield was so new in the market place at the time I bought it, that it was on back order for months. Checked out gun reviews before final decision to buy and they were good. Problem with the reviews is that none I saw were made by women. Would it have changed my decision to buy the Shield had there been more info from other ladies? Probably. Lesson learned.
