This monograph was first put out by the Second Amendment Foundation in 1979. In this essay Ayoob discusses the basic legal, practical and moral rules for the use of the gun in self-defense. Ayoob begins with a discussion of violent crime, observing that the average person cannot imagine the terrifying reality of attack by a psychopathic criminal. Those who have been victimized by such criminals, tend to never fully recover from the fear and overwhelming helplessness of the experience. The gun is the only effective self-defense weapon in such situations. “It is the only defensive tool,” Ayoob writes, “that makes the old and the weak, the halt and the lame, the female and the already-injured, as capable of dealing death or serious injury as any crazed attacker.” 8 pgs., softcover.
