Sig Sauer P239 1st Gen Usage and Features

Primary Use

Concealed Carry

Are You Right or Left Handed?

Left

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

Fit is perfect for my smaller hands, but fits larger hands with absolutely no problems. No mini gun, just slightly downsized.

I’m a lefty but carry and shoot right handed. Can shoot either hand, single- or both hands with no problems.

Simple concept, YOU are responsible for firearms safety. First shot is double action, then single action until you empty the mag or decock the gun.

Tell us about shooting this gun.

I’ve got arthritis – this gun fits my hand and, since I purchased it new when the 1st gen originally came out, it’s not new & overly stiff. I can work the slide without any difficulty.

Drawing & shooting from concealment is smooth and I still got all shots on a paper plate – starting at arms length all the way out to 25 yds after 10 years (!) away from shooting.

I’ve shot out to 97 yds, uphill (prone) on steel with this little gun and got my shots on target (at National Tactical Invitational – Harrisburg PA)

How does it fit your hand, how do you like the sights, how difficult is it to rack the slide, how would you describe the trigger pull, and how would you describe the recoil?

I originally had a P228 but drawing and getting shots on target took some hand manipulations – it was slightly too big for me. I wanted to stick with Sig, so when the P239 came out, it was like they had made this model just for me. Grip, trigger reach/pull – it just works.

How reliable is it?

No problems, no breakages. A few FTF with Federal white box ammo, but they are an exception.

It has gone back to SigArms once for a full rehab, around 5k rounds, but no issues beforehand and no issues were found.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

Nothing I’ve used for concealed carry. As mentioned above, a few stovepipes / FTF with practice ammo.

Does the gun have any specific ammunition requirements? If so, please explain:

No.

What do you dislike about shooting this gun, if anything?

Nothing. Well, originally ordered with Sig’s own optional trijicon nitesights, the came with chrome rings – difficult to see in certain day / illuminated light situations. Changed them out for trijicon’s own nitesights with the usual white rings and all was perfect. A costly learning experience.

Was it easy to take down and clean? Please share.

Absolutely. Flip a lever, rack the slide and the slide can be slid forward and removed. Remove the barrel and spring from within the slide and it’s ready to clean. No takedown tool, no screwdrivers or wrenches needed.

Would you recommend this gun?

Yes

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

Take a NRA shooting class (without your significant other) before buying a firearm. Shoot any and every gun you can. Trust no one’s “expert opinion” on the perfect gun for you.

BUT – don’t over estimate yourself – if you get good, you can always purchase another… or trade up.

Anything else you would like to share about the gun?

I’ve heard Sig’s quality control has had its ups & downs over the years. Most companies have this problem at some point in their growth. I liked my too-large P228 enough to downsize it for Sig’s P239 (which I tested before making my decision) – and eventually I decided that I liked my P239 enough that I purchased another… just because.
