My First Meeting As A New NRA Board Director

Wow, what a week in Dallas! The 147th NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits was amazing and I attended as a new NRA Board Director. It was a record-breaking event. Attendance was the largest it has ever been with 87,154 NRA members! Being surrounded by so many like-minded and enthusiastic gun-owning Americans is incredibly inspiring.

Personally, attending as a newly elected board member had me very excited and quite nervous. I didn’t know what to expect or what it would be like to now be part of the leadership of the National Rifle Association. As I arrived the significance of my election began to sink in. The enthusiasm and warmth with which I was received were remarkable. I can tell you that the leadership of the NRA is very excited to welcome four more women to the team. With the election of myself, Julie Golob, Il Ling New, and Kristy Titus, subsequently, women now make up 30% of the Board of Directors. This is significant, and there is great excitement about it.

The above photo shows President Pete Brownell presenting our BOD pins and swearing us, along with Duane Liptak, Magpul Executive Vice President, in as directors. What a moment! Above all, t was very humbling and such an honor.

Leaders of the NRA

Honestly, one of my most significant take aways was the incredible people that make up the leadership and staff of this organization. Most don’t get the chance to meet and talk with those that are leading and those working behind the scenes. I can tell you; these are remarkable people! Because they love our country, are committed, passionate and extremely hard working. With the current extreme level of attack on our rights, they are working day and night and using every available resource to protect our Second Amendment rights and to effectively train responsible gun owners. I had the chance to meet and get to know many of them, and I can promise you, they are NOT who the media and those who oppose our rights depict. The NRA is in excellent hands.

Once the gavel struck, it was down to work. After that, we received reports and updates from the officers and all committees. Chris Cox, the Executive Director of the NRA-ILA, reported on the hundreds of federal, state and international affairs they are diligently working on. (You wouldn’t believe the sheer volume of anti-gun legislative policy issues they are working on across the country!!)  We also honored the passing of former NRA Board Members, The Honorable Zell Bryan Miller, Warren L. Cheek, Jerry J.D. Williams and NRA Board Member Gunnery Sergeant R. Lee ‘The Gunny’ Ermey.

There was nothing like making history at my first meeting as we initiated the process that will have Lt. Colonel Oliver North, USMC (Ret.) become President of the National Rifle Association of America within a few weeks.  Executive Vice President and CEO Wayne LaPierre. said “This is the most exciting news for our members since Charlton Heston became President of our Association. “Oliver North is a legendary warrior for American freedom, a gifted communicator, and skilled leader. In these times, I can think of no one better suited to serve as our President.”
