The Woman Gun Owner: Who Is She?

It is that time of the year again! That time when we get to get a better understanding of who the woman gun owner is. Yes, it’s data time! Even with the growing concern of sharing any personal information, especially when it comes to guns online, The Well Armed Woman 2021 Survey has collected data on an impressive 3000 women.

This is amazing considering the climate we are in. We wholeheartedly want to thank all of you who took part in our survey. THANK YOU!

So, let’s look at who the woman gun owner is and what she has become over the years.

The American Woman Gun Owner

Let’s start with the age of women gun owners all over the United States. Again this year, we see that the majority of women gun owners fall in the 46-75 age range.

How Long Have They Been Gun Owners?

You can see through this data, that a majority of woman gun owners have been one for a long time. Interestingly, older women have a long history of experience but perhaps have been in the shadows all of these years.

Until not too long ago, there really wasn’t a “place” for the female gun owner. In many ways, she didn’t exist to the industry or the US culture. Now, the view of female gun ownership is more widely accepted and embraced.

Year-Over-Year Comparison

This year-over-year comparison below is fascinating. We have all heard that 2020 was a big year for firearms. Well here is your proof! Just look at the data for the new, 0-1 year of gun ownership. The huge jump in 2020 is glaring.

Income and Merital Status

This year, once again the majority of our respondents are in a marriage/domestic partnership and their annual total household income is over $100,000.

Brand NEW Demographics

We added a few more questions regarding the demographics to this year’s survey of the woman gun owner. I wanted to get a deeper sense of who our sisters in arms really are.

Unity

This really lends a hand to unity. Naturally, we all have our own opinions and views of the world. However, when it comes to being a woman gun owner, there is common ground!

Political Stance

When most people think of “the woman gun owner”, they assume that she must have a right-leaning political view.

Well, this data proves them wrong. The diversity of political leanings looms large in the graph below. It is not just conservatives that believe and fight for our Second Amendment rights. It is women all over the political spectrum. We know that the power to protect our own lives and our loved ones is worth fighting for despite our political differences.

Ethnicity

The results from this next question in the survey really got me thinking.  We REALLY need this to change! I want all women, regardless of their ethnicity to feel the confidence and empowerment of being able to protect themselves with a gun.

So, as we broke the barrier of guns being a “man’s tool”, it’s time for us to get to work and break the cultural, social, and industry barriers to this one.

Region

I also think this area of the survey is very interesting. Who am I kidding, I find all the data interesting!

What I noticed here is that some of the areas where it is difficult to obtain a license to own and carry a gun have some of the highest percentages. For example, California and Oregon, two of the strictest states have a  pretty impressive percentage. 12% of women surveyed live in these areas.

Woman Gun Owner

My Final Thoughts

So what have we gleaned this year about the American woman gun owner?

The woman gun owner is DIVERSE!

There is no “typical woman gun owner”. Yes, I know women are “complicated’ to begin with. 🙂 But, the American gun-owning woman can be whoever she wants to be.

Age, race, political affiliation, economic status does not govern her. Because of this, women of all walks of life are growing into a force to be reconded with. Not only in the firearms industry, but in the ability to stop violent criminals in their tracks!

She is a hardworking, empowered, and brave lady, whom I am proud to stand next to as a sister in arms.

I have been shooting since the early 80s. Proud to say my older sister learned 2 years ago and loves it. We are both in our late 60s. Loved reading all the info.

  2. Paula Morlan says:

As one of those “mature” women in my 70’s – I was excited to see so many of us out there! I had never fired a gun until last year but I am enjoying it SO much! SO fun to show my sons what a good shot their mother is! Ha and they are only in their 30’s!! SO thankful for this group and all the energy and effort our Des Moines group puts into each meeting! Thank you Carrie for your wonderful leadership!!

I’m so proud of you Paula <3 It is wonderful to see so many older women taking charge of their self-defense and refusing to be victims!

  3. Staci eeaver says:

Sad but the average woman is over weight. Please show more videos, holster styles and drawing positions for the 46-75 group of women that are not small to med sized

    1. JoAnne Fox says:

Totally agree. Very few carry methods work for a hefty, curvy woman, and the “guy at the gun store” can NOT help.

  4. Mari says:

    Great & interesting information!

  5. Sue Parrish says:

First of all, I just appreciate hearing from you, our founder, on any subject you want to expound on. I found all of the facts very interesting, and look forward to what else you have going on in your mind to share w/us…..!

Thank you Sue. You just made my day 🙂

i thought the survey was confusing. although i did not buy a new gun this year but have been a gun owner for over 20 years, where do i fall in the data? and not all of my 6 brands were covered. for instances i have a tiny 2 shot 22 long caliber derringer/belly gun that was not included and a foreign (German) no longer made .22 cal i inherited. its my . target gun but not easily concealable

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

Hi Jana, there will be more on the guns owned and types in upcoming articles. With so many gun manufacturers out there, there are just too many to be able to mention them all. But the data on the numbers and types is recorded.

  7. Mary Gauthier says:

Great data to review. Found it very interesting.

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

Thanks Mary! When you look at it, it really can tell as story.

  8. Stephanie Dalinis says:

Thanks for doing this survey, very interesting results

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

      Thank you Stephanie!

  9. Judy Heitzman says:

To me the most fascinating statistic listed was the age group of the women who carried being in my 70s I was fascinated by the number of women in my age group. I thought this would be the lowest number of women carrying. I was also impressed by the number of new women caring in 2021. Even though it seems women carry across the political spectrum I do think the number of increases in 2021 reflects the current political status.

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

Isn’t it fascinating to see so many “mature” women taking charge of their self-defense Judy? I’m so proud of you 🙂 Yes, there are a lot of new women gun owners joining the ranks, it’s exciting to see the diversity of them.

  10. Kat says:

We are strong, and we will protect our families by any means!

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

      Amen Kat!

  11. Laura Womack says:

Very surprised Texas numbers aren’t higher!

    1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

      Yes, I was too Laura.

    2. Tracy says:

Probably because Texas was grouped with New Mexico and Arizona. In a survey by individual states, Texas would be much higher.

      1. Carrie Lightfoot says:

Good point Tracy. AZ would be rather high, but NM likely a lower number.
