Sig Sauer P239 Usage and Features

Primary Use

Home Defense

Are you right or left handed?

Right handed

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

The name, fit and appearance appealed to me. In 2009, I went to a gun show in VA and this was the cheapest Sig in the marketplace. My husband and buddy had Sigs and loved theirs, so I decided to get one.

Tell us about shooting this gun.

Shooting it felt bulky and awkward, even though it fit my hand fine. The sights were not easy to get back on target. The trigger is not light, trigger pulls were 12lbs DA and 7lbs SA.

How would you describe the recoil, is it manageable?

The gun is light weight, so the front recoils quite a bit. With that, it is manageable, but takes effort to get back on target. A bigger beavertail would have alleviated the recoil better.

How does it fit your hand, are the controls of this gun easy to use? (Safeties, slide pull, magazine release, trigger pull, etc.)

I have small hands 3.5″ wide by 7″ long and it fit fine. The magazine release and the take down lever were easy to use. The slide pull had me cursing my husband for talking me into this gun, every time. The diamond plate is absolutely non-functional, it was the worst design ever. The little lever to lock the slide back might as well not even exist, even my husband had a hard time with it.

Do you like the sights on this gun?

No

How reliable is it?

Even though I hated my experience with it, I admit it is still reliable. No misfires, double feeds or anything.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

No

Was it easy to take down and clean?

Yes

Is there anything you dislike about shooting this gun?

It provided no joy because all the normal functions a user would go through when shooting, are made more difficult with this gun. This gun will be more functional if the slide was not shiny and slippery and the trigger changed out to 5lbs. I mean 12lbs is something found on revolvers!

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

Avert your eyes, the time and money to make it work for you is not worth it.

Would you recommend this gun? If no, do you have a preferred gun?

No. I have gone through Kimbers, S&W, Glocks, Springfields, all because I had a bad experience with this Sig, I didn’t go back to them. Now my favorite gun is a Sig P320 Legion X5.

This illustrates why it is SO important to try before you buy! I had a similar experience with the Springfield Hellcat. I purchased one brand new when they first came out without shooting one first. I HATE it! It is sitting in my gun safe in its case, I never shoot it. Lesson learned. What a waste of money.

I wish we could try before buying, but those places are so rare. I too had a Hellcat, sold it after putting one mag through it. Why hold onto something that doesn’t bring you pleasure, right?

Perhaps I’ve never just had the opportunity to try the right one but I’ve never liked Sig Sauer, even the heavier ones. due to their recoil.

I agree with you there. I’m not a Sig fan, but I had the opportunity to try multiple flavors of pistols one day and the Sig P320 X-Five quickly became my favorite. It was the heaviest pistol on the tray, but super balanced. If you get a chance, try it out. The exaggerated beavertail removed any recoil for me.
