Springfield XDS Mod 2 Usage and Features

Primary Use

Concealed Carry

Are you right or left handed?

Ambidextrous

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

*The grip safety, which is an unobtrusive way to add extra safety to the weapon without actually having a manual safety.
*The looks, the logo etched on the slide is a nice touch
* The melonite finish, having more than blued is great for longevity. Really liked the Ruger LC9S but most were blued finishes.

Tell us about shooting this gun.

It shoots really well. Never had a misfire. Went to a class and was the best out of 30, mostly men and I hadn’t gone to the range in more than a year cuz of Covid, but that’s cuz I dry fired a lot, I believe. Still, great reliability. I have small hands and although I could shoot this and the Glock well, my hand was always canted to let me get a good grip on the gun. And instructors hate when you don’t have the back strap directly in the v-cut of your hand. But, again, my hand is small so if yours is too, bear in mind you will forever have people telling you you aren’t gripping the gun correctly. If I grip it the way people say, my fingers barely reach around the other side of the handgrip.

How would you describe the recoil, is it manageable?

Recoil is fine, but I feel that way because I had a snub nosed revolver before and I hated it’s recoil. I probably wasn’t gripping it correctly but my hand would get tired after barely 50 rounds. With the XDS mod 2, I don’t get tired at all.

How does it fit your hand, are the controls of this gun easy to use? (Safeties, slide pull, magazine release, trigger pull, etc.)

My hand measures from bottom to tip of middle finger 6″ exactly. My fingers lay a little less than halfway when I grip it comfortably. When I grip it the “right” way, it is barely overlapping by the first digit. Controls of the gun are easy to use. Magazine shoots out. Trigger pull is a little on the spongy side, more than I’d like it to be. Once you hit the brake, it’s crisp and the reset is audible and fairly short.

Do you like the sights on this gun?

I wish I had the other sights but the fiberoptic sights I have are nice too.

How reliable is it?

Extremely. I trust my and my loved ones lives with it.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

No. Eats anything, but I never tried steel cased ammo and never will.

Was it easy to take down and clean?

Yes. While not difficult, I wasn’t a fan of the Glock’s takedown because of my small hands trying to push the thingies down on both sides of the frame while holding the slide back. The XDS, you just push the takedown lever.

Is there anything you dislike about shooting this gun?

Just the trigger being slightly spongy. Otherwise, great gun, have no regrets. Will give to my kids when I get older.

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

Great gun and well worth the value. Extremely reliable. With the grip safety, you don’t have to worry about making sure the safety is on or off. And there is almost no chance of negligent misfires due to the fact both the trigger safety and the grip safety have to be actuated at the same time to fire.

Would you recommend this gun? If no, do you have a preferred gun?

Yes highly recommend. I am shopping for another gun for concealed carry solely because I live in hot environment and I am really short and small so it is harder to conceal. Right now I use a belly band holster around the smallest part of my waist, upper torso basically. But it’s so big and heavy I have to really strap it down and that is uncomfortable after awhile. So I am shopping for a lighter, smaller gun, possibly the SW Bodyguard 380.
