Boberg XR 9 S Usage & Features

Primary Use:

Concealed Carry

Are you right handed or left handed?

Right

What features does this gun have that appealed to you?

The gun, because of the bullpup design, is very small for a 9 mm and very easy to conceal. Further, it “points naturally”. Because of other features it has a lower felt recoil than other 9 mm pistols I have tried.

Tell us about shooting this gun:

I know I should be shooting the largest caliber I can handle for self-defense but the small .45 ACPs are too much for me. Most 9 mm small pistols are too much for me to handle as well. While the Boberg 9mm still pushes my limits I can handle it. More importantly, it points well and is extremely accurate at self defense distances making it extremely fast for the first and follow up shots.

How does it fit your hand, how do you like the sights, how difficult is it to rack the slide, how would you describe the trigger pull, and how would you describe the recoil?

I have medium sized hands and the gun fits me like a dream. The sights are as good as any factory sights and better than most. I would like to change them for a set of day glow/night sights like my husband uses on his XDs .45, but first the factory has to create a set that will fit the gun. The trigger pull is fine for a DAO, not too long and smooth The drill on racking the slide is different. You must use a strong grip and strongly force it back and forward to properly seat the first round, so it takes some practice but not as much strength as most .380s and 9 mm small pistols. As I stated above, the recoil is as mild as I have experienced in a small 9 mm pistol.

How reliable is it?

Very – with the right ammunition.

Any problems with any type of ammunition?

If there is a negative to this pistol, it is that it is very choosy about the ammo that it will work with. For me, that is not an issue because I always shoot the same ammunition for both practice and when I carry which is Federal Hydro Shocks. There is a fairly long list of ammo this gun does not like, so check the list published on the internet.

Does this gun have any specific ammunition requirements? If so, please explain:

See above.

What do you dislike about shooting this gun, if anything?

Nothing.

Was it easy to take down and clean?

As simple as a Glock, easier than almost every other pistol I tried.

Would you recommend this gun?

Yes.

For someone considering this gun, what would you tell them?

Be aware of the ammo issue. Beyond that, this is the best small 9 mm I have shot or owned.

Anything else you would like to share about the gun?

This gun was built for self defense and it does the job very well.
