Organization brings women together, educating each other on firearms

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) — An organization aimed at educating, empowering, and equipping women with knowledge about firearms is coming to South Central Kentucky.

The Well Armed Woman is a national organization, now placing roots in Bowling Green.

Local chapter leader, Renee McCarty, says it doesn’t matter how much experience you have with guns, that all women age 21 and older are invited to learn about what she’s calling a “sisterhood.”

“I think it will bring more knowledge to women, more women feeling empowered and safe,” says McCarty, on the upcoming classes.

She goes on to say the organization gives women “A place to feel safe and comfortable with learning to use guns, especially somebody who’s never shot one before. Sometimes it can be a little intimidating with all men because it’s kind of a man’s sport right now, but it’s growing as a woman’s sport.”

McCarty says she hopes the chapter meetings make women feel welcome. She says the meetings will have two parts, starting in the classroom with lessons and guest speakers, and ending at the range getting to practice.

“It’s a place to come and learn to shoot guns, or if you’ve already been shooting guns, you can share your knowledge with other women who need it,” she adds.

Chapter meetings begin January 9 at Sherwood Guns in Bowling Green, and are from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.
