There are hundreds of gun models out there and trying to find the one for you is difficult. Everyone is different and has different needs but having a starting point is immensely helpful!

1. Sig Sauer P365

The most popular gun purchased by women in 2020 was the Sig Sauer P365! This high-capacity pistol is a great gun for women and was the second most popular gun purchased in 2019. Most people do not carry spare magazines so having up to 15+1 capacity in your magazine is important. This gun is small enough for most hands and conceals easily. The slim design makes this gun a great concealed carry option.

2. S&W Shield EZ 9

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone! The S&W M&P Shield EZ 9mm has been on the minds of everyone over the last year. The easy-to-use controls make the EZ 9mm an easy choice for women, especially those with hand weakness. Racking the slide is extremely easy with the EZ series (hence the name!) and loading a magazine has never been easier. The load assist has improved time on the range and helped the EZ 9mm rise in the ranks.

3. S&W Shield EZ .380

Well, I think most people could see this coming! Similar to the S&W M&P Shield EZ 9mm, the .380 is one of the easiest guns to handle. With minimal recoil, a slide that racks with little effort and the load assist, this gun will likely be a popular choice for women for a very long time. The biggest difference between this option and the other EZ is the caliber size. Some choose the .380 because they are more comfortable using a smaller caliber gun. No matter why you choose the EZ .380, you can bet you will enjoy shooting this very popular gun.

4. Glock 43

Glocks are some of the most reliable pistols out there. It is no surprise that the third most popular gun from 2019 is still on the most popular guns women purchased list! This 9mm pistol is slim, reliable, and easy to use! Women love how simple this gun is to break down and clean so you can keep it in perfect working condition. If you are a Glock fan there is a good chance you will (or already do) love the G43.

5. Glock 19

The fifth most popular gun purchased in 2020 was the Glock 19, keeping its place from 2019. This gun is a bit larger than the others, but still a great option for women with larger hands. We already talked about why Glocks in general are so popular, but the magazine capacity is the real star of this show! The G19 has a standard 15 capacity magazine but you can go up to mag that holds 33 rounds! In a self-defense situation, you cannot be too prepared or have too many rounds.

6. Springfield Hellcat

The Springfield Hellcat makes its top 10 debut! I am actually quite surprised that this gun isn’t in the top 5 guns women purchased in 2020. I, personally, love this gun. But, this handgun is very similar to the Sig P365, so if you consider both of these models, it shows the desire of women to have the grip size, the higher capacity they want in a smaller, concealable-sized handgun. This 9mm has a great grip for smaller hands and the controls are easy to reach and operate. The magazine capacity is a whopping 13+1 rounds, and the size of the gun is still small enough to conceal easily! If you want to read more about the Hellcat read my review HERE.

7. S&W Shield

I don’t think the S&W M&P Shield will ever leave the top 10. For years this has been a favorite among women. I have to say I am happy to see this additional 9mm option on the top ten list! Though the original Shield has moved down the list (thanks in part to the two EZ options), it is still a very popular option. The size of the pistol makes concealing easy which is always important for women!

glock 43x

8. Glock 43X

Sitting in the same spot as 2019, the Glock 43X is still a top contender. The higher-capacity magazine (10+1) is one of the reasons some will choose the G43X over the G43. Again, Glocks are reliable, easy to use, and simple to break down. It isn’t surprising that this is the third Glock on the Most Popular Guns Women Purchased in 2020 list!

9. Sig Sauer P238

The second Sig Sauer on the list is the ever-popular P238. Racking the slide on this gun is basically effortless which is one of the main concerns for women looking for a new gun. The small size and lower caliber (.380) combination make shooting and carrying the Sig Sauer P238 a breeze.

10. Ruger SR22

The Ruger SR22 is the only .22 caliber pistol on this list but it is a great gun especially for beginners who are just learning how to shoot. The low recoil and relatively cheap ammunition makes this a fun gun to use at the range. It is recommended that you use at least a .380 caliber gun for self-defense but if a .22 is all you are comfortable with it is better than nothing!

Such a shame that so many have never heard of the Bersa Thunder .380. Both my sister and I have one for concealed carry and love it! We both have smaller hands and I have DJD in my thumb so a well fitting grip was actually hard to find in many of the ones listed. In the few grips that fit there was really only the Bersa that was then easy to rack and reach the safety. Would be nice to see one in some of the comparisons articles since it is such a comfortable and well fitting gun for those with arthritis and smaller hands. FYI we also both have S&W revolvers for by the bedside which for me, and my thumb, takes one step out of the process of confirming a threat and addressing it.

I have the ruger 380 and the s&w 9mm. I’m purchasing the ruger 22 revolver this week with the magnum cylinder. I also own a sig sauer 380 and am looking at the sig 9mm or the s&w EZ slide. hope this helps

    Choosing the self-defense pistol

I visited my sister this weekend for the 1st time since the pandemic started. During the visit, I asked her if she would like to take her Kel-tec 380, 3AT, out in the yard and practice with it. The next day she wanted me to “look at it” and check it out.
We walked into her bedroom and her pistol was up on a cabinet, out of reach of children, but 3 (three!) boxes of 380 ammo were visible. There were 3 different brands, 2 were boxes of 50 one a larger box, 100 or 150 rounds. I admonished her about these markers identifying her as a gun owner and perhaps leading to a burglary. Her reply was that she only allowed trusted repairmen in her bedroom, men that she trusted.
She then pulled her Kel-tec from the top of the cabinet, still in the plastic box it came with. We took the pistol back in the dining room and opened the box. The gun was unloaded, the clip was out of the gun and empty, so we talked. She did not want to keep it loaded with a round in the chamber, so we compromised with a loaded clip inserted and no round in the chamber.
With an unloaded clip, I showed my sister how to put the clip in, then rack the slide back to chamber a round. She made 3 tries and was unable to pull the slide back successfully. I took over and the gun worked perfectly, little resistance pulling the slide back with my thumb and index finger.
To review my discoveries, my sister should not have 3 boxes, with vivid red lettering, Winchester .380, drawing the eye, for family and strangers to see. Accidents, burglaries, theft may result. There is no justification for casual display like this. The next problem is having a weapon for self defense that is in a box, unloaded and needs to be opened, find the clip, open a box of bullets, load the clip, insert the clip and rack the slide.
Noises in the night, being half asleep, minimal light, and always remember Murphy’s law, if something can go wrong, it will happen. If she wants the 3 boxes on top of the cabinet, fine, but cover them with a cloth. Keep the clip loaded and in the pistol. Then under sleep and fear induced stress, all she had to do it find the gun, find her flashlight, rack the slide, and check to see if there is a threat inside or outside the house.
My next step is to exchange her semi-automatic pistol with a revolver, kept loaded, and no slide needed to be racked before it is capable of self-defense.

I have a Sig 380 and love it. My husband has a Kimber 9. I have shot both and find the Kimber 9 to be easier for me to shot, only because it is a bit larger in size and the kick is much less then the Sig 380. I love the Sig for the conpact size and easy draw, and for my small frame its much easier to conceal.

  5. Adrienne C. Morton says:

Wow. I have 4 of the guns on this list. I love my Sigs and my EZ Shield and LCP 2
